4 Things to Do Before You Call a Plumber!

Murphy’s law tells us that if something can break, it will, and it will do it at the worst possible moment.  Plumbing issues tend to follow this same law.

And while your natural inclination might be to call a plumber before you do anything else, not so fast! Because there are a few things you can and should do firs to locate the problem and prevent it from getting worse.

  1. Locate the problem – Do you hear the sound of running water? That’s probably a problem if no one in your house, to your knowledge is using water at the time. Follow the sound and do your best to locate the source.  If the toilet is overflowing, turn off the water valve to that toilet. If you can’t for any reason, your next best move is to shut off your home’s main water valve. Turning off the water main is also a good idea if you can’t locate where the sound of water is coming from.
  2. Determine the extent of the problem – Is the problem one leaky faucet or a flooded basement, for example? Also, how extensive is the problem itself and whatever damage it might have already cause? If this is all happening in the middle of the night, small problems can no doubt wait until the next morning, especially if you’ve shut off the water supply to things can’t go worse. But if you have a true plumbing emergency on your hands, you can call us no matter what time it might be.
  3. Check in with your water company – Does your plumbing problem stem from work being performed by your water company? It might if, for example, they’re in the process of repairing or replacing underground pipes in your neighborhood. A quick phone call or website visit should provide the answer.
  4. Do your research – Unless you have a plumber you know and trust, take a few minutes to search vs. relying solely on that coupon your received in the mail. You want someone you can trust for now and any other time you need professional plumbing assistance.
